Heavy for the Tropics

Heavy for the Tropics are a bacchanal – an alternative outfit combining indiegirl melodies, noisy post punk guitars, and a vast array of grooves and rhythms.

HFFT are as their name suggests: emoting the heaviness of modern life through thought provoking lyrics, but as if you are on holiday with music that is energetic and explorative, like raving on Bikini Atoll in stunning desolation….whilst continuously downing cough syrup. Drawing from copious creatives such as The Breeders, Mariana Enriquez, Deerhoof, Dinosaur Jr and Hannah Hoch, HFTT are kaleidoscopic.

HFTT have received support from BBC Introducing.

”…Off-kilter organ and beat combination creates a jazz-from-the-future vibe, a mix of Dutch Uncles, Paul Simon and Alt-J…matched with a vocal that just oozes indie cool and charm.” – Listen With Monger

Beret of Discontent

Out 13th October 2026 is the heart fracturing ‘Beret Of Discontent’, spiny guitars melt into the walls, warm fiery organs keep a little warmth in from the bitter cold outside.

Jake says

“The genesis of this song goes all the way back to just after lockdown, as with several of our tracks you can hear the afrobeat and Mambo influences which we were listening to at the time. The song builds to a huge crescendo and often concludes our live set. We based the concept for the video around the song’s lyrical themes, aiming to visually capture the feeling of constantly moving backwards.”

Rank Party

Abandon all niceties and manners, this is a rank party.

Louise says

This boisterous track is often the opener to our live set, with dark brooding verses building to the bouncing choruses. This is a gathering of people you would be ashamed to be seen in public with. These people don’t even like you. Tomorrow you will hide in a pit of embarrassment at how badly you danced to the beat of the cowbell, but for now blow a fuse, release that tension, shoot your shot and heave.

Slipper Whippings

SLIPPER WHIPPINGS revels in its defiant nature – but is it celebrating tenacity and resilience or a glimpse into a life filled with insatiable rage? Reflect on what drives us to persevere through groovy salsa inspired verses that are confronted with energetic art punk choruses and a syncopated bizzaro head bop break.

Ian says

“Slipper Whippings is one of my favourites to play live, you can shake your tail feather to it but it still has that raw punk drive. The middle eight section where the boppy groove is invaded by slices of abrasion always gets the heart rate up. Also, who doesn’t love a mutinous song to make us puff out our chest and prove all our doubters wrong?”

Vanities

VANITIES is a surveillance on western society’s beauty business – its promotion of unattainable standards and the disposable nature of individual’s dignity for profit, all set with angular punk underpinnings, an afro-beat influenced groove, and wordplay reminiscent of Lullabys era QOTSA.

It’s not just the consistent aggrandizement of unnatural, spurious, or outright fabrication of beauty. It is also the voracious nature of the industry, our media, and us online in judgement of all who cannot live up to a fictitious standard.

Ian says

“Vanities is one of the first ever tracks we wrote as HFTT and encompasses a lot of our ideology. It has the lively instrumental with its punk, art rock, and psych influence paired with the social commentary in the lyrics delivered with a catchy melody, almost catching you off guard with how surreal some of the words are!”
